iPhone or Android: Which One’s Best For You
May 16th
When it comes to smartphones, the two most popular platforms would have to be Apple’s iOS for iPhone and Google’s Android. Both platforms have their fair share of advantage and disadvantages, as well as different hardware options when it comes to Android.
Being in the tech reporting industry, I carry both with me – an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S2. Both devices have their pros and cons and today I am going to tell you my biggest likes and peeves with them in hopes that it will make it easier to decide which direction to go with your smartphone purchase.
iPhone vs Android: which is better for you?
Starting off with apps, the iPhone wins hands down. Not only does it have a bigger selection but because they are developed for a single screen size (3.5-inches) and platform (latest iOS update), the apps appear to be of a higher quality. This is because app developers don’t have to make adjustments to be compatible with a wide range of devices like in the case of Android (Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola DROID X, Android 2.3, Android 4.0, etc).
Keyboard: While the iPhone keyboard is possibly the best stock touchscreen keyboard out there, it doesn’t compare to the many options you have on Android. Third party keyboards like Swype and SwiftKey let you choose which type of typing style you are most efficient at. As an added bonus, if you want a physical keyboard, you can opt for an Android smartphone with one (e.g. Samsung Epic 4G).
Display: Comparing it directly with my Samsung Galaxy S2, I can confidently say that it display blacks more better than the back-lit iPhone 4S. This makes the multimedia experience look that much more richer. But at

Google Android ‘Jelly Bean’ 5.0 devices due in the autumn
May 16th

Posted on 16 May 2012 at 10:30
Google is rumoured to be planning a wide-ranging partnership for its next-generation smartphone devices, with as many as five different Nexus-branded devices duet to appear later this year running Android ‘Jelly Bean’ 5.0
Previously, Google has promoted a single ‘flagship’ handset at the launch of each major edition of its Android operating system. When Android ‘Eclair’ 2.1 was released, HTC made the Nexus One handset to Google’s specifications. With the release of Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 it was Samsung’s turn with the Nexus S. The tablet-only release of Android ‘Honeycomb’ 3.0 saw Google partner with Motorola, while the most recent release of Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ 4.0 was launched with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
In each case, Google has chosen a single manufacturer to be the lead partner on the design of its flagship device – although it typically has several other partners contributing components to the build.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the impending launch of Android ‘Jelly Bean’ 5.0 will change all that with up to five distinct devices due from as many partners launching on day one.
It’s a serious shift for Google, but one which comes as the company seeks to purchase mobile maker Motorola. As a result, it seems that Google is hoping to assuage its partners’ fears that once it has its own mobile manufacturing capabilities they will become second-class citizens.
Although as-yet unconfirmed by Google, which has declined to comment on the report, the rumour places Android 5.0 as launching in the autumn this year with five

HTC handsets delayed at US customs due to ITC injunction over Apple patent
May 16th

HTC confirmed to The Verge that its One X phone for ATT and EVO 4G LTE handset for Sprint are being held at the border by customs officials. The shipments are being delayed while the government agency reviews the packages in accordance with an ITC ruling that banned the import of HTC’s Android smartphones.
In December 2011, the ITC ruled that HTC violated Apple patents, one of which describe a UI feature that lets you tap on an address or phone number as a link and pull down a menu of appropriate actions. HTC said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal that its products are no longer infringing, “We believe we have worked around our design and are now in compliance with the ITC ruling. We are cooperating with the U.S. Customs to speed up the review process.”
Depending on how long it takes for the review, HTC could face shortages of its One X, which went on sale last month with ATT. It may also have to delay its May 18 launch of the EVO 4G LTE with Sprint.

Sony and Panasonic in talks to make OLED TVs
May 16th
Sony and Panasonic are reportedly in talks to develop the technology needed to mass produce next-generation OLED televisions, according to Reuters. The two companies would be playing catch up to their South Korean rivals, Samsung and LG, both of which plan to market 55-inch OLED TVs later this year. “Overseas competitors have gotten a head start in this area and I feel like they’re stepping into this too late,” said Masayuki Otani, chief market analyst at Securities Japan. “There’s no question OLED TVs are going to be the mainstream. The issue is price and size of the displays.” OLED panel technology, which Sony pioneered in 2007, provides users with improved picture quality, deeper color saturation with high contrast, and allows vendors to make TVs as slim as 4 millimeters that consume less power than traditional LCD sets. There is a barrier, however: current OLED TVs are very expensive — Samsung’s upcoming 55-inch OLED TV will cost $9,000 when it launches in South Korea in the coming months.

Apple’s next iPhone will have a 4-inch display, WSJ says [updated]
May 16th
Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone handset will reportedly feature a larger display that measures “at least 4 inches diagonally.” Mirroring numerous earlier reports, The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday cited multiple anonymous sources in claiming that Apple’s next iPhone will include a new larger display. The Journal adds that panel orders have been placed, however, and that Apple has tasked LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display with supplying the new screens. A recent report claimed the next-generation iPhone would utilize the same 3.5-inch screen found on Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, however multiple earlier reports suggested that the new iPhone will finally receive a larger 4-inch Retina display and 4G LTE compatibility. BGR exclusively reported in December that Apple will launch a completely redesigned iPhone this fall that will include a redesigned antenna system, likely alongside a new aluminum case and 4-inch display.
UPDATE: Reuters independently confirmed The Journal’s claims with its own sources in a report Wednesday morning.

Apple patent spats finally pay off
May 16th
The launch of Sprint’s flagship EVO 4G LTE has been delayed indefinitely and supply of ATT’s flagship HTC One X will be constrained as a result of ongoing patent disputes between HTC and Apple. HTC confirmed in a statement emailed to BGR on Tuesday evening that shipments of its new EVO 4G LTE and One X smartphones have been held up by United States Customs as part of an International Trade Commission investigation. Before the phones can clear Customs, the ITC will need to determine that HTC’s new handsets are in compliance with an earlier ruling.
“The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order,” an HTC spokesperson said. “We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.”
Sprint was scheduled to launch the EVO 4G LTE, a customized version of the One X, on May 18th for $199.99 on contract. ATT made the One X available earlier this month, however the device is now listed as out of stock on ATT’s website and supply will be constrained until shipments clear Customs. The import delays mark the first time one of Apple’s numerous patent complaints against rivals in the U.S. has paid off.

HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE imports stalled by U.S. customs
May 16th

HTC this evening has confirmed in a statement to Android Central (and everybody else, we imagine) that importation of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE handsets have been delayed at the U.S. border because of a customs review. As first reported by The Verge, this likely stems from the ITC exclusion order Apple was granted last December over hyperlinks in the messaging app and browser.
HTC’s official statement:
The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.
HTC has said that the issues raised by Apple in front of the ITC were trivial and would be removed from their products, but customs must review the shipments coming in after the April 19 deadline set in place by the ITC. We hope HTC’s confidence is warranted, and we see the phones on the shelf, where they belong.
Opines Rene Ritchie at our sister site, iMore.com:
Apple’s lawsuits against HTC — and Samsung and Motorola — stem from Apple’s feeling that Android was “grand theft” of iPhone intellectual property. Basically, they believe Google partnered with Apple, had their then-CEO Eric Schmidt on Apple’s board, and then not only stole Apple’s ideas about smartphone technology, but gave them away “promiscuously”.

Samsung Galaxy S III available a day early for pre-order customers in some stores
May 16th

Samsung originally revealed May 29 as the official launch date of the Galaxy S III in Europe, before retailers started announcing the device for a purported May 30 release. Today it seems the original date of May 29 will still stand, but only for pre-order customers in a handful of stores across the UK.
This morning Samsung UK sends word that customers pre-ordering the Galaxy S III at the Samsung store at London’s Westfield Stratford City will be able to pick up their phones from 6pm local time on Tuesday, May 29. But if you’re not in London, then don’t worry — Samsung is giving other retailers the chance to hold its own early launch events for pre-orderers, as early as 7pm on that evening. So it’s worth checking with any stores in your area if you fancy getting your hands on an S III a few hours before everyone else.
Regardless, the phone will go on sale nationwide on May 30, and it’ll be available on all five major UK networks.
We’ve got Samsung’s press release after the jump. For more on the Galaxy S III, check out our full coverage from the London launch event earlier this month.
