Adobe Creative Cloud and Creative Suite 6 now available
May 11th

A few days after originally anticipated, Adobe has now made its Creative Cloud and Creative Suite 6 products available for purchase and download.
Adobe is making a big push for its Creative Cloud subscription service, which offers access to all 14 of its desktop apps and previews for other products. The exception is Lightroom, which Adobe says will be coming soon.
The six Adobe Touch apps are each a separate purchase, with four of those apps available for the iPad now. Adobe Collage and Adobe Proto are newly available on the App Store. The only Touch apps now available are Kuler and Debut, but they’ll most likely hit the App Store soon.

Beta iCloud site briefly appears along with developer’s site (updated)
May 11th

TUAW editor Dave Caolo noticed that the iCloud beta site briefly featured icons for Notes and Reminders. The good folks over at MacStories and developer Steve Troughton-Smith spotted the same thing. It was up long enough for a quick screengrab then disappeared. Is this a teaser for WWDC? As a certain archaeologist would like to say, “Spoilers!”
It’s interesting to note that the screengrab Dave managed to get is different from the ones that the MacStories crowd got, so it looks like Apple is messing around with the layout. It also appears that a beta version of iOS 6 will be required to use Notes and Reminders via iCloud, MacStories states.
Notes and Reminders are logical extensions of iCloud, ones that should have been there from the beginning. It’s good to see that Apple is adding them now.
As Dave notes, there’s plenty of room behind the iCloud sign-in for a seventh icon. What else do you think Apple could be adding to iCloud? Let us know in the comments
Update (1 p.m. ET): It looks like someone at Apple is flipping switches, as a developer’s site became active, disappeared and is now showing again.

Adobe updates Photoshop Touch for iPad with better resolution
May 11th
When I reviewed Adobe Photoshop Touch in February, I found it generally capable, but the app would downsize any large images you loaded to 1600 X 1600, which was very skimpy. This latest version, 1.2, released today, lets you increase the resolution to 2028 X 2048. Note that you must allow that in settings or it defaults to the standard 1600 X 1600.
That’s an improvement, but still falls short of even the iPhone 4 resolution (2592 X 1936), the iPhone 4S camera (3264 X 2448) and of course the new iPad resolution of 2048 X 1536 at a dense 264 pixels per inch.
There are some other welcome features, including Creative Cloud auto-sync, and new special effects, including the ability to render in a pseudo HDR look. You can also now export to PSD or PNG formats via email, or from the camera roll. The update also sports improved rotate and flip workflow and the option to transfer images to your desktop via iTunes.
iPhoto for iOS also downsizes imported images, unless they are being imported through the Camera Connection Kit. Used that way, iPhoto for iOS supports images up to 19 MP.
While this latest version of Photoshop Touch still doesn’t completely exploit the new iPad retina display, it is a step in the right direction. The update is free to current owners. The app requires an iPad 2 or greater, and iOS 5 or greater.

Radio Shack discounts iPhone 4S, 4 by $50
May 11th

Earlier this week, RadioShack announced via Twitter that the iPhone 4 and 4S will be on sale for a limited time. Following in the footsteps of Target, the electronics retailer is slashing the price on all models by $50 until June 30. This offer is only available in stores as Radio Shack does not sell the iPhone on its online website.

Apple claims Samsung destroyed "vast quantities" of evidence
May 11th

The dispute between Samsung and Apple is heating up in the United States, with Apple now claiming Samsung destroyed vast quantities of evidence crucial to the case. According to Network World, Apple filed a motion in the Northern District of California that alleges Samsung intentionally destroyed documents it was required to hand over to the court.
The motion points out this is not the first time Samsung has been accused of destroying evidence. A 2004 trial between Samsung and Mosaid revealed that Samsung routinely deleted emails from computers every two weeks, even when it’s required to keep them as part of a court case. Apple claims this email deletion practice and others adversely affected Apple’s case against the Korean handset maker.
Samsung has until May 15 to file a response to Apple’s accusation. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for June 7, 2012. Samsung denies that it destroyed evidence and is asking for an extension until May 29 to respond to the allegations and a delay in the hearing until July 10.

Pocket gets update and a whole lotta downloads
May 11th

The app that began life as Read It Later and that’s now known as Pocket (Free) has received a significant update to version 4.1, and the developer took the opportunity to report just how successful the app has become.
Since the rename and relaunch of the app three weeks ago, Pocket has received over 2 million downloads across a variety of platforms, and reached the #1 spot for free news apps for iPhone and iPad quickly. Pocket also became the third most downloaded iPad app within hours of the release last month.
According to the press release from Read It Later, Inc., today’s update includes the following features:
- Page flipping mode — In addition to Pocket’s default scrolling option, users can now swipe left or right inside an article to enable Page Flipping and read one page at a time.
- Improved Dark theme and an all-new Sepia theme — With refined contrast and readability, these options make reading even more comfortable.
- Increased maximum font size — For those preferring larger print, Pocket’s font-size options have been expanded so users can find the perfect font size for reading.
In addition, Pocket now has the following enhancements:
- Dark theme throughout the app — Use Pocket comfortably at night, whether in Article View or browsing through saved content.
- Add URLs from clipboard — Pocket now automatically detects URLs that are copied to the clipboard so they can be added directly to Pocket for easier saving.
- Support for additional video sites — Pocket’s in-app video streaming now supports popular sites including TED, Devour and Khan Academy.
I personally use Pocket to capture content to read later, and it works extremely well. The improvements truly add a lot of utility to an already great app.

Watch Fink & The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in HD on your iPad
May 11th
Just last night I discovered a real musical treat for the iPad. On April 29th 2012, the fantastic British singer/songwriter, Fink, performed a set with the incredible Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Conducted by Ivan Meylemans and arranged by Jules Buckley, this is Fink as you’ve never heard him before. And the performance was broadcast live and in HD on the iPad with the “RCO Meets Fink” app. Unfortunately, I missed this.
However (and to my delight), you can still purchase (US$3.99) and download the app to stream the entire performance on your iPad (or Apple TV via AirPlay) in HD at your leisure. Better still, a 2.0 version of the app will hit in June with extra features.
As explained on Fink’s website, “The 1.0 version of this App offers a full HD video stream that will enable you to enjoy the concert in the highest quality on the latest iPad and Apple TV hardware.” Expect a big update to the app in June, which will include backstage footage, rehearsals, interviews, video commentary and more.
We’re also interested to try the “360 degree video component,” which should allow you to move around in the concert footage. We’re not sure how that will work, but it sure sounds interesting. Version 2.0 sounds pretty exciting, but the app at 1.0 isworth the purchase just to watch the performance in HD.
As a little teaser for the performance, you can watch the track “Yesterday Was Hard On All Of Us” below.

FreedomPop iPhone case to offer free 4G connectivity
May 11th

Earlier this year, FreedomPop said it was working on an iPhone case with an integrated cellular radio that would provide users with free mobile broadband access on Clearwire’s 4G WiMAX network. Now, the company is taking pre-orders for this 4G WiMAX sleeve.
Each sleeve will cost US$99 and will include 500 MB of free mobile data. This is a drop from the planned 1 GB of data FreedomPop hoped to offer. You can bump up that data by participating in a social service that’ll earn you an unspecified amount of data for connecting with your friends. Customers can also transfer unused data to other customers who need the extra capacity. (Note that the company’s pre-order page still says “up to 1 GB of free data.”)
You can read more about the FreedomPop case on the company’s website and watch a promotional video about the sleeve in the YouTube video below.

Etcher iPad case works like a real Etch A Sketch
May 11th

We get to see all sorts of Kickstarter projects here at TUAW. There are the incredibly successful and “why didn’t I think of that” projects like the Pebble e-paper watch (now at well above US$10 million in funding) or the Une Bobine iPhone cable (fully-funded, as discussed on TUAW TV Live). And then there are projects like the Etcher iPad case that might be technologically cool, but impractical as hell.
The Etcher is an iPad case that looks and works like an Etch A Sketch. Sure, there are other Etch A Sketch cases for iPad, but how many of them work just like an Etch A Sketch? You can turn the knobs, which cause a line to be drawn on an app on the iPad. You can save and share your works of art, and then erase the Etcher app screen with a shake of the case.
The Etcher iPad case has been developed by a crack team of tech wizards — Ari Krupnik, who has developed a number of successful iPhone and iPad peripherals; Maarten Dinger, who was on the design team for the Flip camcorder; and Lee Felsenstein, one of the original members of the Homebrew Computer Club in the 1970s and designer of the original Osborne 1.
Now, to get to the main point of my post. Yes, this is very cool. Yes, it’s officially licensed by Ohio Art, the folks who make the “real” Etch A Sketch. But is it really practical? The Etcher will apparently sell for about US$45 provided it gets funded. For that amount, you can buy three original Etch A Sketch toys from Amazon and probably have enough change left over to buy a
